Steven,

I'm not sure how to put a Mpls slant on this issue, because I don't know how
many striking state workers live in Mpls. I'll check with union leaders to see
if they have numbers to answer this question. I'm don't think there's anything
elected Minneapolis officials can do to help, because it's strictly and issue
between the workers and our employer, the State of MN. In the court of public
opinion, every positive remark helps, and the StarTrib editorial from yesterday
was great for boosting our confidence on the picket line. Maybe our mayor or
council members could release some official statements encouraging the gov to
negotiate a settlement with the unions.

I know that it's a real hardship for many of us, and the raise we're fighting
for will not make up for wages lost while out of work if the strike lasts more
than two weeks. I hope people realize that the strike is not about the workers
being greedy or unreasonable. It's amazing that we have to fight tooth and nail
to keep our wages even with rising inflation and health care costs, while some
grind an axe about tax rebates and reform. We need the governor to be more open
to negotiating this with us, but it doesn't seem like he's willing. Maybe some
encouragement from multitudes of local and state elected officials will make
him realize it's in everyones best interest to solve this strike soon.
