Downtown lacks a full-service grocery, and the one
closest to the south side
of Downtown will close at the end of May, its new
owners say.

Bob Kowalski, marketing vice president of
Woodbury-based Kowalski Companies,
said the former GJs Super Valu grocery at 1816
Nicollet Ave. will close
when the lease expires.

Chris responds:

This is indeed very bad news. Nor am I terribly
impressed with the Kowalski Grocery recently
opened on Hennepin, which is presumably where most
people (without cars) in the Stevens area will be
routed once the Nicollet store closes. Kowalskis
has higher prices - I was in there a few weeks ago
and the mark-ups, particularly on meat and
vegetables, seemed high. GJ's was no prize - the
selection was mediocre in quality and needlessly
pricey as well (what isn't nowadays?), but at
least it was an option. Now there will be none
within walkable distance.

The city should work to secure another tenant for
the Nicollet location - Rainbow, Cub - whatever.
We need a grocery downtown.
