Before this thread goes any farther there are a few things that were not
included in Mr. Grow's story; three neighborhoods, Folwell, Jordan and
Cleveland asked for help to prevent further convenience stores from
locating along the Penn and Lowry corridors before the proposed store at
35th and Penn was on the horizon.

Penn Avenue is the east and west border of Folwell and Cleveland. Jordan
Neighborhood is directly to the south of both neighborhoods along the
Lowry Avenue Corridor. Cleveland and Folwell are fully within the 4th
Ward, as is part of Jordan, represented by Council Member Barbara
Johnson.

The property owner and the business owner were both aware that the
neighborhood(s) did not support the opening a convenience store at the
35th and Penn location. Objections were written in response to site plan
publication for public comment.

You should also know that presently, as there was at the time of the
objection, six convenience stores, 4 associated with fuel sales in a
seven block area round the 35th and Penn location; 38th and Penn, 36th
and Penn, 34th and Penn, Lowry and Penn, Lowry and Thomas, and Lowry and
Logan. There are also two Asian groceries in the same parameters.

This is not a case of NIMBY, rather-no more in our back yard and is an
example of neighborhood opinion being taken seriously by the City
Council.

Doug Grow's story about this gutsy immigrant who poured over twenty
thousand dollars into a North Minneapolis storefront only to be told he
can't open a business there should be required reading for our mayor
and every council member.
