About last night's election.... This is at least the fourth consecutive election in which total votes cast has dropped:
1993: 104,626 (46% turnout) 1997: 96,772 (47%) 2001: 89,927 (41%) 2005: 70,987 (31%) (Minor Caveat: registered-voter numbers have risen 14 percent since 1997, from 200,311 to 228,538 this year. This isn't just due to the 2004 Bush-Kerry registration drive: registration actually rose faster between 1997 and 2001, was up 17,500.) Rybak won every ward in McLaughlin's commissioner district. McLaughlin won only the 4th and 5th wards (with 48 and 45 percent, respectively). Rybak received 14,500 fewer votes than in 2001; McLaughlin received 5,000 fewer votes than Sayles Belton did that year. If you removed every Southwest precinct from the vote totals, Rybak still wins by 5,000 votes or 56 percent (23,521 to 18,250). Rybak did win every Southwest precinct, and 72 percent of the vote in that neck of the woods. McLaughlin won 26 of the city's 131 precincts (20 percent). Ward-by-Ward 1 - Rybak, 54 percent, winning 8 of 10 precincts 2 - Rybak, 64 percent, 10 of 11 precincts 3 - Rybak, 56 percent, 5 of 9 precincts 4 - McLaughlin, 52 percent, 7 of 10 precincts (one tie) 5 - McLaughlin, 55 percent, 6 of 10 precincts 6 - Rybak, 60 percent, 7 of 8 precincts 7 - Rybak, 72 percent, 11 of 11 precincts 8 - Rybak, 61 percent, 8 of 10 precincts 9 - Rybak, 53 percent, 8 of 11 precincts 10 - Rybak, 71 percent, 11 of 11 precincts 11 - Rybak, 69 percent, 9 of 9 precincts 12 - Rybak, 58 percent, 11 of 11 precincts 13 - Rybak, 75 percent, 10 of 10 precincts Rybak ran ahead of the winning councilmember in Wards 2 (Gordon), 6 (Lilligren), 8 (Glidden), 10 (Remington), 12 (Colvin Roy) and 13 (Hodges). The female-dominated Council didn't materialize: it's 7-6 guys (Ostrow, Gordon, Samuels, Lilligren, Schiff, Remington, Benson for the XY team.)
