About two years ago Carol Becker posted a reply to another list member
clarifying city budget issues. Later that day Loki Anderson forwarded
the email to me with the comment that she would make a good member of
the Board of Estimate and Taxation. About a year ago I started
discussing that possibility with Carol and shortly thereafter she became
a candidate for the BET.

One of the first donors to the campaign donated because of what they had
read in Carol's posts on this list. At a precinct caucus someone unknown
to Carol got up to speak on her behalf and cited her postings on this
list. Many of the lawn sign locations procured the last three months
were with people who just knew Carol through this list.

In other words, Carol Becker's successful and highest vote-getting
campaign for the Board of Estimate and Taxation was incubated and
significantly formed on and by this email list. There is real legitimacy
to the claim that she is one of the first elected officials, at least
that I have seen, who has emerged from the internet and not just used it
as a fundraising and GOTV tool.

Her amazing background in and knowledge of public finance were very big
helpers but so was this list!
