Thanks Andy, that's very interesting. I looked at Twitter's streaming API, but afaict it's only useful for non-browser apps. They talk about using a single HTTP request and getting back an infinitely long document (with some delimeters). https://dev.twitter.com/discussions/3022 "You need to use raw sockets to consume the streaming API."
