You are right it does use more H/W resource. But for some applications,
it is just a trade-off. Let's see what we can buy back with use of CF Card:

- It's paralell I/F and using roughly 1/8 clocks to read and write(compare
  to serial). In the other words, the device can be put in sleep mode for
  longer to save power,as well as emitting less electromagnetic noise.

- More securer connection. To remove a CF card needs for pounds of force, 
  not just grams. Imaging if there is damage to the device housing, 
  which card is more likely to stay socketed?

- Better ESD protection. Try to hold the CF card then MMC/SD card by 
  yourself and guess which part of the card would catch ESD spark!

- Less efforts to implement a file system.

A balance has to be made between their pros and cons if you expect 
your product to operate reliably, efficaciously and safely. However,
for just playing with, it may not be the case. I play with MMC too.
