My simplified take:
· If you want to learn about the latest technologies and what you’re going to be doing in the coming years, go to Ignite. (Typically this would be IT architects, project managers, technical leaders, consultants, partners, etc.) o 80% or more of the Ignite sessions are level 300 or 400; the “manager who doesn’t really watch what’s going on in technology” would likely be lost if they venture past the keynotes and 200-level overview sessions. o You can’t beat the *breadth* of the sessions – with hundreds of sessions to choose from on every possible Microsoft technology, pick out some things that you don’t know. · If you want to learn about how to do your current job better, using current technologies, go to MMSMOA or similar conferences. (Typically this would be IT pros, IT administrators, etc.) o You’ll see very few overview sessions – with the focus on people who are doing jobs that leverage specific technologies, no one there needs an overview ☺ o You can’t beat the *depth* of the sessions – I’m always surprised that even the most esoteric topics (which seem to be the ones I end up presenting ☺) have strong interest. Just be careful: If you focus only on what you’re doing today, you may find yourself unprepared for the jobs that you will be expected to find in the future. Here's my (opinionated) take on it. If you have a budget to go to a conference in the US, and you are an engineer/technician; you'll get more out of MMSMOA.com . It's more about getting things done, as well as showing some new stuff. There's also another more technically minded conference, called ITDev Connections. I prefer mmsmoa; but that's just me. Go to Ignite if... 1) You are a manager that doesn't really watch what's going on in technology, and you need the 10,000 foot view of what's current and upcoming; with almost no technical details on how to actually get there. 2) You are a tech... but whomever it is that holds the budget for going to a conference can only wrap their head around "so, you want to go to a tech conference, you must mean Ignite, and only Ignite, and anything else is just not possible". i.e., you have no other choice. It's at least better than nothing; and if you are diligent about monitoring every possible social media, you can hunt down other techs and have some meaningful conversations. 3) you have budget for 3 conferences: then go to all 3!
