Well, Xak 2 works all right when played on a Turbo R... But I agree that,
generally, most MSX-RPG's' scrolling is not really high quality... On the
other hand, the fact that those Japanese companies' games' scrolling is of
low quality, does NOT automatically mean that it's IMPOSSIBLE to make a good
scrolling game.

Some time ago, when Sargon was still actively developing software for MSX,
we started an RPG-project called 'The Curse of Kaijruu'. Although this
project didn't even approach completion, our programmers DID some research
concerning acceptable scrolling AND real-time battles. They thought it was
very well possible... The main cause of The Curse not to be finished, was
not this aspect, but rather the fact that the project was just too BIG... If
the game would ever be finished, there wouldn't be more than two or three
MSX-users left to play it...

But anyway, that's another plus-point of Dante 2... This game has very
acceptable scrolling as well...

Perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad idea when the programmers still developing
software for MSX started exploring the Turbo R... It's relatively easy to
make a smooth-scrolling RPG for the Turbo R, and I think many of the
MSX-users nowadays own a Turbo R so that doesn't have to be a problem,
either. Take, for example, MoonLight Saga. This game's scrolling is quite
smooth...

But I think there's one thing you really have to keep in mind: the plot is
the most important part of an RPG, NOT the way it scrolls. The living
evidence for this is SD-Snatcher.

Rieks.
