I think you're confusing terms "fearless" and "mentally retarded".
Sort of like when suicidal people jump off buildings. You don't call them
fearless. You can call them a lot of things, including "weak-willed",
"egotistical", "at the end of one's rope", but not fearless. There's a point
in time when people's minds stop functioning properly. I believe that was
what happened to the hijackers.
As far as calling them professionals, I agree. They certainly knew what they
were doing.
