I have no idea (yet).  But as Christian pointed out, it could be a 
peculiarity in the Win32 handling of libtool/autoconf.

I know your feeling.

I live without Windows since 1994.  It has not always been easy, but 
always pleasing.  Especially the lack of a need to install an antivirus 
(although I _got_ a virus _once_ on Linux; a server connected to the 
internet 24/7, with a user "ron" with password "ron"... go figure).
