I finally downloaded the Microsoft CCID class driver. A signed (and daily countersigned) zip is available to anyone from the windows update catalogue: its under input devices, MS, search "CCID". If you know windows, you can have the signature, the counter signature, and the various cert signatures checked (or not checked) at install time, and/or dll load time.
This is interesting - my question is, do you trust Microsoft more than you trust your own eyes looking at source code? This, to me, is the crux of the argument with opensource.
