I still think there's something missing in "Concerto for violin" if we're describing a concerto for violin & orchestra. I do agree that concertos most of the time are written for a solo instrument + orchestra, it's more that this formal way of writing titles somehow suggest exactness to me: "Quartet for 2 violins, viola and cello" "Sonata for piano" "Concerto for violin in D major" <--this means "for violin & orchestra"?
