My goal is just make the MIDI play the repeats.
This requires adding the repeat/alternative blocks in each voice of
polyphonic music. It's not a big deal, at least for normal scores I'm
used to (i.e. single instrument, not orchestral).
I wouldn't care about other Midi features (like slowing down the time
when there's a fermata).
And of course I'm not going to update all the 1727 pieces of Mutopia
by myself :-)
I'll focus on guitar music.

I'd definitely use barcheck.
Measure numbering -> you mean comments indicating the measure number, I guess.
Personally, I put comments to identify the parts only, not the
measures. When I have to jump to a specific point, I use
point-and-click.
