 Yes, I understand that specifying non-encrypted messages in the search
 pattern could mitigate this. But:

 1) One often doesn't consider this when crafting a search
 2) Once you've made the search, it's difficult to abort it
 and
 3) Caching of passphrase (following the setting of $pgp_timeout /
 $smime_timeout) seems to behave differently with searches than with other
 operations. My guess is that this last behavior could be changed. In many
 cases, I do in fact want to search encrypted messages; I just don't want
 to have to type my passphrase a thousand times.
