It's never really been clear (to me at least) that there's any good
reason to want this feature, despite the fact that many formats
support it.  The point of marking messages as deleted is to actually
delete them.  If you're not ready for a message to be deleted, you
should not mark it as deleted (and thus avoid risking that they
accidentally get purged when you didn't want them to be).  

So, I'm inclined to think that you're trying to do this in order to
solve a problem that may be better solved a different way...  It might
be beneficial to explain what your purpose is, so the many bright
minds on this list can offer potential alternatives.  Or, if the
purpose is something that's generally useful, a feature which
accomplishes it might be considered and perhaps added to Mutt.
