 The ticket was opened claiming a semantic change in the interpretation of
 the caret.  If that were the case, this would indeed be a backward-
 incompatible change.  (However since the 1.5 series is technically non-
 stable, this would not have been the first such one.)

 The caret was not ignored, but (during parsing of the muttrc) was expanded
 to an undefined/empty value.  Things in fact did not "work", as your
 folder-hook would also match a folder "foo-buildd".  Since this actually
 happened to others, it seemed important enough to merit an error message,
 pointing out the problem.  So really, I think this was more of a "fixage"
 change.  :-)

 I understand the frustration at having your previously fine muttrc
 generate errors now, but longer term I think it's more important to have
 the problem pointed out than having the hooks fire at mystifying times.
