In general, this is really not a good argument for virtually any case that affects typical users. It might be a good argument for an application that is running on hardware that might kill the user if it breaks (like, say, an X-ray machine, or a dialysis machine), or something equally critical, but for *E-MAIL*? Just... no. [I will actually elaborate momentarily.] > (mutt stores mails in /tmp which is either a tmpfs or emptied on > reboot). False: Mutt stores mails where you tell it to. You can set the system-wide environment variable TMPDIR (which admittedly is becoming less useful as decades of Unix lore becomes lost to younger crop of developers writing software, but Mutt still honors it), or set Mutt's own $tmpdir. In the absence of either, it uses a default for your system, which on Unix-alikes is indeed /tmp, but may or may not be a tmpfs file system, and may or may not be cleaned on reboot. It isn't on ANY of the many systems I run. But then, Mutt also does not write my temp files there, anyway. > I admit the current situation is not perfect, but at least I > won't lose the message no matter what happens once I've pressed > send. False. Your computer might crash immediately after you hit send. Your disk drive may fail, or become irreparably corrupted. A power supply problem may cause your machine to explode. Crashes happen; disks break; all manner of data loss happens. Mutt can't deal with every case of system failure, and shouldn't try--that isn't its job, and by and large there's not a lot you can do about most of them regardless. Worst case scenario, the message (or at least the collection of ideas it captured) is in your head. Retype it, resend it. If your computer does crash, and the message got sent, you can just ask the recipient to forward it to you. -- Derek D.
