Using a large mallet, Darren Evans whacked out:

Use fetchmail with the keep option - popping mails using mutt's built in pop3
is a royal pain.

use procmail to split the mail - if you use the keep option the mail remains
on your remote mailbox so you can pop it down unmangled later
