Ok, so I'll reply to my own email.  It looks like my system is pretty
screwed up.  But it seems like I fixed the problem by doing this:

%> CFLAGS='-g -pipe -Dwint_t=int -DBUFFY_SIZE=1' \
  ./configure --with-slang --without-wc-funcs && make
