There aren't umlauts in the body, they appear in the header. For the body someone just needs a character set and an encoding. Headers may not contain 8bit characters but have to be clean 7bit. Thus, any non-7bit-stuff in headers has to be encoded, see RfC 2047. The question mark in his mail is an ordinary question mark (ascii: 63, hex: 0x3F). bye, Rocco [just to clear this up]
