This is nice and fast:

and does the same colouring I wanted.
Small further analysis: the reason commenting out my auto aliases sped
things up was that it made `%f polyname` fail (unknown group) and
therefore did not attempt the `~h` match.
Maybe the docs should have a small mention around `~h` that it cannot
utilise the header cache.
