I think you're missing the point. This option simply sets the number of pixels used by VLC to represent the video, the MVP will (as it should) fill the full width of its output with the video it recieves. Changing this option will only have an affect on the percieved horizontal resolution of the picture (ie from DVD->SVCD will start to look a little softer). This setting is just a "CPU cycles (on the transcoding machine) & bitrate vs quality" option, it should only change the quality, not the size/shape of the picture. I think it may be easier to start by telling us what you're actually trying to solve/achieve by changing this setting, and we can see if there's a better/another way to do it.
