Hi Tom...

Don't have cable, so don't deal w/QAM. But the "re-runs / classic" OTA
ATSC digital stations I get provide 5.1 audio (well, it's stereo). As
such, there is no sound at the MVPMC but the picture works well. There
have been attempts to pass this type of audio but the sync problems are
still there. Anyone know different?

Is it you or someone else - but the question keeps surfacing regarding a
new mythbackend feature to transcode the stream to a lower bandwidth
with stereo sound.

So far, I haven't heard much on this except it might be difficult to
handle commercial skipping and other jumping around (depends on how this
information is stored - it's independent of the video and transcoding
the video would probably break the relationship between the two).

I think the present state of the MVPMC as an mythfrontend is confined to
SD NTSC recordings. I know there are those who use VLC to do on the fly
transcoding on the back end. And others who transcode all their
recordings to a lower bandwith MPEG2s. But I think those of the first
group don't get commercial skipping. And, not to mention, they have to
use the MVPMC file browser (i.e. all that hard work on the MVPMC Myth
style front end is out the window!). And those of the second group are
deleting their high resolution copies of their HD shows.

To be honest, even though I have an ATSC tuner I don't do either of
these (yet). (If pushed, I'd probably do the second option.) So I would
appreciate anyone correcting me if I am in error w.r.t. how these
methods currently work.

To thwart off the HD problem, I picked up a Galaxy IPTV 3500 which does
a nice job w.r.t. decoding the HDTV videos. However, the firmware is
only marginal and relies on the mythbackend's upnp server. Using
Swis<something> or WizD makes the 3500 much more palatable. But it
would still be nice to port the mythfrontend (reads: "...nice to port
the MVPMC project") to the 3500. Unfortunately, no one has. This is
very surprising as:
1) This box runs uClinux.
2) The SigmaDesign chip set is widely used (Galaxy, MediaGate, LiteOn,
Netgear....)
3) Some of the source code if available for the asking. However, what
makes people upset is that key drivers are missing.

So, right now, if you are fixed on a small front end that can handle HD
from a mythbackend, I would say you need to look at the new HD version
of the MedaGate (MG3500??) or the "no longer made" Roku Picture Bridge.

Do people have other suggestions or comments on these?

...thanks.
