I've been running Simon's dongle this past week and my observations are 
similar. The "starving audio buffer" symptom is gone.

The black screen symptom I only ever see when skipping over the first 
commercial break of a show. That seems oddly specific.

Additionally, I've have seen an instance or two of the video freezing 
(while audio keeps going) and audio being way out of sync with the 
video. Both only seem to happen after fast forwarding.
