I fixed the problem I was having and now mvpmc gives me the same internal error message being returned from the server as the Hauppauge dongle making it easy to test some non-mpeg files. It's been a while since I tried the Hauppauge server but I was able to find an old wmv file that played with no sound, so I disabled Simon's a/v sync routines and it worked.
