With current MythTV releases, NUV containers hold either MPEG4 or RTJPEG
encoded video, neither of which can be played natively with mvpmc.

Your options are to either transcode on the fly with VLC, or setup a
transcoding job (search the list for "transcoding script").

On the UserVoice suggestion list
(http://mediamvpmediacenter.uservoice.com/) there is (I think; or should
be) a suggestion to integrate VLC with MythTV playback, such that VLC
gets used when necessary, without having to switch to the filesystem
browser.

If you don't see the suggestion there, add it. Otherwise vote for it,
and feel free to take steps towards implementing it, like researching
what code changes are needed.

Not that I've seen, but it'd be a pretty simple script to put together.

However, if you are browsing the filesystem to locate a show, you'd be
better off using one of the tools (see the MythTV user contribution
directory) that create a directory of symbolic links with full show
names, rather than trying to find the right raw file name in the MythTV
video directory. The rename script should be easy to tweak to change the
extension.
