Unfortunately it is not a Ubuntu bug, I have the exact same bug
in Fedora 10.   So it is something with VLC that changed, it may be 
that mvpmc needs to be using a different output codec (assuming that 
there is another output codec that will do mpeg2/mp3).

And I don't have a solution except to run VLC on a older OS version.
