I hate going on about this, but the NMT (Popcorn Hour) is still
viable.  The GB-PVR client does everything that one would need for an
mvpmc replacement and I've posted this YouTube videos before

with someone on a VDR front-end now and just today someone else on the
NMT forums posted their video of what is possible with DirectFB (Jon
had the same basics over a year ago).

The problem isn't the MVP alternative, the problem is the lack of
desire to build this client.  Given the power of the ION this is
understandable, but with the EGreat M34a NMT's at $140 it's still
relatively expensive.
