As Roger suggested, the problem was indeed AC3 audio in the recordings
from my pcHDTV tuner.
The following seems to work well so far. I'm just running it as a
cron job, since I haven't figured out how to use MythTV's transcoding
features.
ffmpeg -alang eng -i inputfile.mpg -f mpegts \
-vcodec copy -scodec copy -acodec mp2 outputfile.mpg
