I can see where that would get confusing. Hint for next time, minimize (rather than hiding) the sections you dont use, and move them all to the bottom. That keeps them pretty much out of your way, but makes it harder to forget that they are there.

Thank you Dwight,

My mistake was that in an attempt to clean up the somewhat overwhelming amount of power/detail of MLO that  had gone into Tools/Options/Appearance  and turned off 'Effort'.   And then  mistakenly thought the Project 'Time Required' was 'Effort'.

All good now,
thanks for your quick and knowledgeable response.

under "properties" in the right sidebar find the "effort" section. For me it's all the way at the bottom. Fill in the min time and max time fields with the appropriate amounts of time in minutes or hours. You can do this for each task under a project and also for the project item itself. The time required for the project, in the "project" section of the project item's properties, will be the sum of the min and max effort time in the project and all of its subtasks.

I have used this variable in the past, but now I am not able to use it.  For a given task, I tag it as a Project, and then the two variables "Time Required For the Project" Max and Min appear in black instead of grey, but when I go to input a value it doesn't let me.

Now it seems that these variables are simply meant to roll up the 'Time Required" by their sub tasks, but how do I input a Time Required?

I see that I have older tasks (not projects) where I inputted Time Required, but now for non-projects those values are greyed out and empty in the Properties box, even though they show up in my View

Any insights would be appreciated.
