Sindhu,

I am a student of Dept. of Physics, and our dept has a bunch of
teachers who also happen to be open source enthusiasts. They have
written their own programs to automate the tedious calculations, and
obviously, they are on linux machines. In our computer basics course,
we are exposed to Linux 'only'. We learn Octave (not mathematica or
something like that). We learn gnuplot, not Origin. We learn LATEX,
not MS Word. Almost all the machines run on linux in our dept. Linux
Habba was held in our dept itself.

This semester, my friends and myself are automating some calculations
in Python, under the guidance of Prof. Sridhar (he is the one who
introduced me to MyLUG). Our project reports should be in 'Latex',
its a condition. His slides are always prepared on Linux machines. All
machines in his lab run on Linux.

So, this is the environment in Physics dept. If you find CS a bit
boring, you can spend some time in our dept, which is just behind the
CS:)
