The nvidia driver you install will be picked by the X server.  The 
kernel does not come into the picture when you are starting X. 

IIRC, the X in gloria can sense and choose the appropriate driver.  
Install nvidia driver and try booting on 2 different machines.

In case, X does not start properly on the machine with nvidia, you can 
edit the xorg.conf and restart X.
