Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17800 (project mypaint):
Have you tried the "pick context (W)" feature? It selects both brush and
layer at once.
I agree that you have described a problem that should be solved somehow. But
I find the solution that you propose much too complicated, especially for
users who don't know what it is all about.
We could blink the last stroke every time you select a layer (like "pick
context" does), and we probably should introduce layer locking such that a
layer can't be selected any more (other discussion somewhere).
