Follow-up Comment #2, bug #17981 (project mypaint):

Layers are often used as a better undo stack (or revision control, if you
want). Duplicate layer, then do something you're not sure about. Ideally you'd
be able blink between the current and previous layer to check whether it was
an improvement or not.

I have to contradict you, Edgar, when you say duplicate layers would be
perfect for this. As far as I know this workflow, you'd never want more than
one of the duplicated layers visible at the same time, so the standard layer
GUI (as it is also in GIMP for example) is not really ideal for this. You're
always toggling one layer off and the other on, and your layer list is
cluttered by "undo information". Still, it works.
