But how can we reliably find out whether we are close to "out of memory"?
Preferably without special-case for every supported platform.
If we can detect out-of-memory reliably, we should probably start by trimming
the undo stack before warning the user.
Also it seems silly to give a warning only when adding a layer, I think it
would be better to check during natural painting breaks. An almost-empty layer
(eg. for detailing a single object) does not need much memory, and you can
exhaust your memory just as easily by adding more and more sketches to the
infinite canvas...
