Follow-up Comment #18, bug #18460 (project mypaint): Weird. If you don't have a /usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/16x16, something's gone very wrong if /usr/local was your prefix.
Can everyone watching give the latest master as of f269337 and its parent a try please? It's much more assertive about setting permissions after each file has been installed, so you shouldn't trip over anything there.
