Well l'ts make sure it works before adding autohide ,ofcourse. But my reason for having it is because it takes some of the hassle out of managing your panels.
This would be the workflow 1)add panels to sidebars (left or right) 2)they should slide open if they are hidden to put panels in, 3) they linger for a short few seconds and then hide. 4)If you need to access a panel inside the sidebar, just bring your stylus/mouse near the edge of the screen,it'll pop up. 5) you do what you need to,change settings,etc... 6)You should be able to press a button (visual or keyboard) to keep the sidebar open if you so wish. (toggle) 7) if you want to let a panel open permanently you should be able to extract it. this kind of workflow is so handy. Pressing Tab works well ofcourse, but I find it takes more time then it should. Also it makes me move my hand around , while slight, makes even more wasted time. Besides this way makes a clear distiction between panels that are docked and panels that float. Panels that float won't autohide,so most likely they will be the kind of panels you want to see ALL the time. Panels that are docked, and IF you activate autohide, are panels that don't need to be active always. If done right it could make painting so much more enjoyable. OR I just thought of something. Would it be easier to....to somehow have a function that Auto-presses 'Tab',after a few seconds,if the sidebar area is not active, and auto-press tab again if you hover over that sidebar area again? It sounds a bit quick and dirty though, and I'd still prefer the first implementation, but if there are problems somewhere, this could be a workaround...? > Shouldn't be too difficult; the layout code is already written and > could be reused. I'm hoping to find time to code a bit in the next few weeks (though I doubt it) But anyway good to hear.
