No it isn't the only free database around.  There are others like postgres.
It is the fastest database around but it does lack functionality.  Some
functionality was sacrificed for speed, others are still in development but
it gets better with each new version.

It has the best support I've ever come across and it's free.  MySQL may or
may not be for you, all depending on your needs.
