Perhaps.

In this particular case it doesn't. I need to ensure that each URL
exists only once. And it is entirely possible to have a URL with 300
characters in it.

I'm looking into alternatives now. The prospect of having to recompile
the master and slaves with a higher value for the max key length
doesn't appeal to me right now. I have "real" work to do...

Perhaps we'll be able to tweak that value on a per-table basis in
versions 4.x...
