Doesn't the rise stop at a certain level if you let it run for
a few days?

MySQL starts with little memory but allocates more when needed,
upto certain limits that you can set with server variables.
Look in the manual for exactly which variables to use, if you
want to lower these.

I'm running 3.23.33 on a Solaris system without memory problems.
