How stupid of me!
I had copied a my.cnf file to another slave withouth changing the server-id.
It is amazing that replication still worked for both slaves with the same id, 
albeit every minute...

Idea for the (great :-) developers:
  - maybe the master could detect that and print something in its *.err file?
