How did you get and install mysql? MySQL supplied binary? 3rd party binary? Built from source? If the answer is not "MySQL supplied binary", my first suggestion would be to try that to see if the problem goes away.
I installed it from an ebuild, via Gentoo's portage system, compiled from source.
Thanks for the suggestion; I'll give the MySQL binaries a shot.
