OKay, here's the problem - a self-built MySQL. Unfortunately, due to some glibc bugs it's not really possible to build a stable MySQL under linux using stock glibc... And the problems are like the one you are experiencing. I'd suggest you to download and install MySQL binary RPMs from www.mysql.com.
