I had the same problem.  It just won't seem to upgrade.  You need to
uninstall mysql-3.23.58-9 and mysql-server-3.23.58-9 first.  Enter
something like this:

rpm -ev mysql-3.23.58-9 mysql-server-3.23.58-9


When it's done, then install version 4.x
