Hi

A client of ours has experienced some rather serious hardware failures
resulting in disk errors and therefore corrupted InnoDB files.

We could not get mysql to restart unless the innodb_force_recovery was set to
5. In this situation we encountered failure when attempting to read from
various tables even using the mysql command prompt.

At this stage we decided to try restoring from backups. Now mysqld seems to
start but then die perpetually but restart itself each time. This means that if
you try something from the mysql command prompt, it usually gives you, for
example something like:

# mysql mysql

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.

Your MySQL connection id is 1 to server version: 4.0.15-Max

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> show tables;

ERROR 2006: MySQL server has gone away

No connection. Trying to reconnect...

Connection id: 1

Current database: mysql

mysql>

It successfully reconnects, and looking at our own tables, all the tables and
data appear to be there. Unfortunately the mysql drivers for java from our
application are throwing an exception when the connection closes and so our
application is not working.

The symtrace from the err log gives:

0x81224d2 handle_segfault + 738

0x4009796c _end + 935442920

0x82fc501 fseg_free_step_not_header + 593

The file system has been checked, and all packages have been checked for md5
checksum failures with no result (running MySQL Ver 4.0.15-Max for suse-linux
on i686, suse version 9.0).

Hope someone has some ideas.

Thanks
