MySQL 4.1 and 5.0 should work fine with koi8-r and may other character

sets. Please, read :

  http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset.html



in case you haven't done this yet. And if you don't solve you problems,

send to the list output of the following statements:

  show variables like '%char%';

  show character set;
