Tim:

MySQL can certainly do the job on the backend ... but the more critical
decision is the selection of the shopping cart software.

Shopping carts range from free/GPL/Open Source to many thousands of dollars.
There are carts available that use perl, cgi, PHP ... not all support MySQL,
but the best ones do.

We are configuring FishCartSQL (www.fishcart.org), but there are many
others.
