I would probably recommend replication. It's not that bad to setup and once it catches up on the slave then it will continue to be an easy sync in the future as long as both are running. How big is the database you wish to synchronize? What connection are both servers on?
Is there anyway possible to disable to VPN between the two D.B. servers? Perhaps a firewall in between is in use and you can simply setup access rules for both to talk to each other?
