Put a user line in the [mysqld] group of the /etc/my.cnf option
file, like this:
[mysqld]
user=mysql
Then start the server as root (safe_mysqld, mysql.server, etc.).
The server will notice the user line in the [mysqld] group
and change its user id to that of the mysql account.
